A pool is a flexible daytime load, so the cheapest setup runs the heat pump and pump straight off the array in the middle of the day and leans on the grid for the rest. A battery is for shifting power to the night or for backup, neither of which a daytime pool load needs, and heating a pool at 2 a.m. off a battery makes little sense. Buy a battery for your house or an outage, not to run the pool.

Solar pool heater vs solar panels and a heat pump: what is the difference?
This trips up almost everyone, so it is worth clearing up first, because it decides whether a battery even enters the conversation. Two very different systems both get called solar pool heating.
- A solar pool heater, the thermal kind, runs your pool water through black panels in the sun, and the sun heats the water directly. It moves heat, not electricity. There is nothing electrical in it to store, so a battery does nothing for it.
- Solar panels plus an electric heat pump is the setup this page is about. The panels are photovoltaic, meaning they make electricity, and that electricity runs an air-source heat pump pool heater, the kind that moves heat from the outdoor air into the water. Because there is electricity involved, a battery can store it.
So a battery, a Powerwall, only ever applies to the second setup. And the part that surprises people is that a Powerwall stores electricity, not heat. You cannot bank warmth in it for later. If your goal is to heat with the sun and coast through the night, the pool water itself is the better heat battery, holding its temperature overnight under a cover far more cheaply than any lithium battery could store the electricity to reheat it.

Can you run a pool heat pump on solar panels?
Yes, and it is a good match. An electric heat pump pool heater does not burn anything; it uses a compressor to move heat from the outdoor air into the water, and it is efficient at it, returning something like 4.5 to 6 units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws. Feed it electricity from solar panels instead of the grid and its running cost drops toward nothing.
The catch is not whether it works but how much power it wants. A mid-size pool heat pump, say around 120,000 to 140,000 BTU, draws roughly 5 to 7 kilowatts while the compressor is running. For reference, a Hayward HeatPro in that class lists about 7.2 kilowatts of input. That is a large, sustained load, much bigger than the pool pump, and it runs for hours, so the real question is whether your solar can keep up with it, which is the next section. How many solar panels does a pool heat pump need?
Enough that this is a real array, not a couple of extra panels. Heating a pool with a heat pump typically uses somewhere in the range of 15 to 50 kilowatt-hours a day, and it can run higher in a cold snap or with a poorly sited pool. How much depends heavily on your pool size, your climate, your target temperature, and whether you use a cover, so treat any figure as a range, not a number.

Do you need a battery to heat your pool with solar?
Usually not, and this is the part the battery sellers gloss over. A pool is one of the rare big loads whose timing works in your favor. You heat the pool during the day, and the pump runs during the day, which is exactly when the panels are producing. So the panels can power the heat pump and pump directly, in real time, while the sun is up, and you self-consume nearly all of it without storing a thing.
A battery exists to do two jobs: shift power to a time when the sun is not shining, and provide backup when the grid is down. A daytime pool load needs neither. Heating a pool in the middle of the night off a battery is close to pointless, and a heat pump would drain a battery fast anyway. A typical home battery holds only about 10 to 14 kilowatt-hours usable, while a heat pump can ask for 40 or more kilowatt-hours in a day. That is true whichever brand you look at: a Tesla Powerwall 3 and a FranklinWH aPower 2 land around 13 to 15 kilowatt-hours, an Enphase IQ Battery is smaller per unit at 5 to 10, and even the largest single units from names like Panasonic or Sonnen sit near 15 to 20. So one battery covers only a few hours of pool heating, and running a pool overnight would take three or four of them, thousands of dollars of storage doing a job the sun already does for free during the day. The takeaway that owners repeat is that a battery is the least necessary part of a solar pool setup.
That does not mean a battery is never worth owning, only that the pool is the wrong reason to buy one. Where a home battery earns its place is when you want it for the house, for backup power during an outage and to shift your evening use off peak rates. Does net metering change whether you need a battery?
A lot, and it is the one place the answer depends on where you live. Net metering is the arrangement where your extra midday solar feeds the grid and you pull it back later, and how generously your utility credits that export is what tips the answer.
- Where full-retail net metering still exists, the grid is effectively your battery. You export the midday surplus at close to the retail rate and pull it back at night to cover the pump or anything else, which is cheaper than buying a battery for the pool.
- Where export credits have been cut, California's NEM 3.0 being the big example, exported power is now worth a small fraction of what you pay to buy it back. That flips the best move to self-consumption: deliberately run the pool pump and heat pump in the midday solar window to use the power directly rather than dumping it to the grid for pennies. Even then, the pool runs on direct solar; a battery, if you buy one, is justified by the house's evening peak, not by the pool.
Net-metering rules vary by state and utility and have been changing, so check your own utility before assuming either case applies to you.
Can you heat a pool completely off grid with solar and batteries?
You can, but this is where the cost gets serious, and it is worth separating two very different ambitions. Running just the pool pump off grid on solar is a genuine success story: a direct photovoltaic setup with a variable-speed or DC pump and a handful of panels can handle filtration with little or no battery, and owners report near-zero running cost with a payback of a few years.
Heating a pool off grid is a different animal. Now you need enough panels to run a multi-kilowatt heat pump plus enough battery to ride through clouds and the compressor's demand, and the battery, not the panels, is what dominates the cost. Owners who have priced a full off-grid heat-pump setup end up at large numbers, and the consistent advice from people who have done it is that it is far cheaper to save a kilowatt-hour than to store one. Before spending on batteries, spend on the things that cut the load: a variable-speed pump, a pool cover, and a right-sized heat pump. One more trap worth naming: do not try to heat a pool off grid with a resistance electric heater, which has none of the heat pump's efficiency and would need several times the panels for the same warmth. Does a solar pool heat pump qualify for the federal tax credit?
This is the most commonly misstated part, in both directions, so it is worth stating the rule plainly. The federal residential clean energy credit covers solar panels that generate electricity for your home and home battery storage of at least 3 kilowatt-hours, at 30 percent. Crucially, the swimming-pool exclusion that trips people up applies to solar water heating, the thermal panel kind, not to photovoltaic panels or a home battery. So solar panels and a qualifying battery are credited as solar-electric and storage property, and they do not lose the credit just because some of the electricity they make or store happens to run a pool heat pump or pump.
That is the opposite of a thermal solar pool heater, which is a classic non-qualifier because it heats pool water directly. The important caveat is timing: this credit was moved up to end for systems placed in service after the end of 2025, so it is winding down rather than running for years as it once did. And this is a state-the-rule matter, not tax advice, so confirm your own situation against the current tax forms and a professional before counting on any of it.
What it takes to build it right
If you want to do this, the setup that works is a grid-tied array sized to cover the pool's daytime load, feeding a heat pump pool heater and the pump, with the grid as your backstop and a battery only if you separately want one for the house. A few things that make or break it:
- Size the array for the heat pump's real draw, not a guess. A 5 to 7 kilowatt heat pump wants several kilowatts of panels producing while it runs, so plan for the array to carry it in the midday window rather than trying to island it around the clock.
- Use a variable-speed pump and a cover. These cut the load you have to power in the first place, which is cheaper than adding panels or a battery to feed a bigger load.
- If you add a battery, size it for the job you actually want, which is usually house backup and evening use, not overnight pool heating. A small buffer battery to ride out cloud passes on an off-grid pump is a different, much smaller thing than a whole-home Powerwall bank.
- Plan for the permits. Grid-tied solar needs a utility interconnection agreement and an electrical permit, a home battery has its own siting rules and wants a licensed electrician, and the pool heat pump still has to be bonded into the pool's grounding system by code no matter what powers it.
Done this way, a pool heat pump on solar gets you most of the way to a nearly free-to-run pool without the expense of a battery you do not need, and the battery, if it ever makes sense, is a decision about your house, not your pool.
