If you only heat the garage now and then, do not overbuy. The goal shifts from maintaining a warm space all day to getting warmth fast when you are out there, or just holding the space above freezing when you are not.
For the occasional weekend session, infrared is the smart pick. A radiant heater like the Dr. Infrared warms you and the tools and surfaces directly, the way the sun does, so you feel it within a minute or two instead of waiting for the whole volume of air to come up to temperature. That also makes it the right call for a drafty garage or one where the door keeps opening, because the heat is not sitting in the air waiting to escape. - Electric resistance is the cheapest to buy and the safest to run in a closed garage, because it makes no combustion gases at all. It turns nearly all the electricity into heat, but electricity costs more per unit of heat than gas, so it is the most expensive to run. Buy it for a small or insulated garage, occasional use, freeze protection, a rental, or any no-gas situation where low upfront cost and a simple install win.
- Natural gas is the cheapest to run and the best choice for daily use or a large space, but it costs the most to install because it needs a gas line, venting, and usually a permitted pro install. It is the forever-shop answer if you have gas at the house.
- Propane is the flexible one: it runs anywhere from a tank with no gas line, which is why it suits detached garages and no-utility spots, but it costs more per unit of heat than natural gas and you deal with refills. Many gas unit heaters run on either fuel.
- Infrared is a heating method more than a fuel, and it is the efficient pick for spot and occasional heat because it warms people and objects instead of the whole air volume. Before you buy: can your garage run it, and should you insulate first?
Two checks save people from an expensive surprise, and both happen before you click buy.
The electrical panel is the one that catches everyone. A real electric garage heater, the 5,000-watt class and up, is not a plug-in. It needs its own dedicated 240V circuit, typically 30 amps for a 5,000-watt unit and 50 to 60 amps for a 10,000-watt one. That is a large load, and many panels, especially older ones or a 200-amp panel already carrying an AC, a range, a dryer, and an EV charger, simply cannot spare it. Then you are paying an electrician for a new circuit, and if the panel is full, a subpanel or a panel upgrade, which can cost more than the heater did. A 120V plug-in heater sidesteps all of this, but it tops out around 1,500 watts, roughly 5,000 BTU, which only warms a small, well-insulated space or a workbench corner, and it wants a dedicated 20-amp outlet with nothing else on it.

Which garage heaters are safe in a closed garage?
This is the part to get right, because a garage is a tricky room: it is often closed up, and it holds a car, which is a second source of carbon monoxide. The safe answer depends on the type.
Electric heaters are the safe default for an enclosed garage. They burn nothing, so there is no carbon monoxide and no oxygen being used up. That single fact is why electric is the easy call when the garage stays shut.
Any combustion heater needs air and care. Propane and gas heaters produce carbon monoxide and water vapor as they burn. A permanently mounted gas unit heater handles this by venting the exhaust outside, which is why those are fine for a daily shop. The danger is with unvented portable heaters run in a sealed space. Only use a portable propane heater that is rated for indoor use with an oxygen-depletion sensor, the kind that shuts the gas off if the oxygen in the room drops too low, like the Mr. Heater Buddy line, and even then crack a door or window for fresh air, keep a carbon monoxide alarm going, and never leave it running unattended or overnight. Forced-air propane and kerosene "torpedo" heaters are a different animal: they are built for outdoor or well-ventilated construction use, they have no oxygen-depletion sensor, and their own manuals say not to run them in living spaces, so they do not belong in a closed garage. One more common complaint worth knowing: unvented propane and kerosene dump water vapor as they burn, which beads on cold steel and rusts tools, another reason serious daily users go with vented gas or electric.
