Why are some rooms hotter or colder than others?

If one room in your house is always hotter or colder than the rest while the thermostat reads fine, the problem is almost never a broken AC. That room is either not getting its fair share of conditioned air, or it is gaining or losing heat faster than the rest of the house. Both have fixes, and several of them are free. This walks through the room-to-room causes in the order that usually matters, starting with the checks that cost nothing, including the closed-door trap that surprises most people. A single room that runs hot or cold is usually starved of conditioned air. Make sure no furniture or rug covers the supply vent or the return grille, try leaving the door open for a day, and look for the manual damper on the duct feeding that room and open it. If those do not fix it, the cause is a longer duct run, duct leaks, a room that gets heavy afternoon sun, or a room over a garage. Why is one room always hotter or colder than the rest of the house?

Two things make a single room uncomfortable while the rest of the house is fine. The first is airflow: that room is not getting its share of the conditioned air the system makes, usually because the air cannot reach it or cannot circulate through it. The second is heat load: the room gains or loses heat faster than the others because of sun, an unconditioned space next to it, or weak insulation, so the same amount of air cannot keep up. Most room-to-room problems are the first kind, and most of those are free to fix.

The reason it shows up as one stubborn room is that a central system has one thermostat in one location. It cools or heats until that thermostat is satisfied, then stops, whether or not the room at the far end of the duct ever caught up. What free fixes should I try first for an uneven room?

Start with the things that cost nothing, because they solve a large share of cases. Change the air filter if it is dirty, since a clogged filter starves the whole house and can look like a balancing problem. Then walk the problem room and clear anything blocking air: a sofa, bed, dresser, or rug sitting over a supply register stops the conditioned air from entering, and the same furniture over a return grille starves the room from the other direction. Make sure the register louvers are open.

The highest-leverage free fix is the one most homeowners never touch: the manual balancing dampers in the ductwork. Many duct systems have small levers on the branch ducts near the air handler, separate from the louvers on the register itself. Find the damper on the duct feeding the cold or hot room and open it fully, and slightly close the dampers feeding rooms that are already comfortable, which pushes more air to the room that needs it. Why does closing a door make a room hotter or colder?

This is the cause almost nobody knows about, and it is worth understanding because the fix is cheap. Air has to balance: every cubic foot the system blows into a room has to find its way back to the return grille, or the room cannot keep taking in new air. In most houses the return is a single large grille in a hallway, not one in every room. So when you close a bedroom door, the supply vent keeps pushing air in, but that air has no easy path back out. The room pressurizes, and that back-pressure fights the incoming air and chokes it off.

The effect is real and measurable: airflow into a closed bedroom can drop from around 150 cubic feet per minute with the door open to under 100 with it shut, which is exactly why a closed-door room drifts hot in summer and cold in winter. The simplest test is also the fix: if a room is uncomfortable with the door closed but fine with it open, the door is the problem. Leaving it open solves it for free. How do you fix a closed room that gets stuffy or uncomfortable?

You give the air a return path. There are a few ways, cheapest first. Undercutting the door, trimming the gap at the bottom to about an inch, is the cheapest and the weakest: it lets some air escape but usually not enough on its own. A better fix is a transfer grille, a vent cut through the wall above the door or into the hallway, with a grille on each side, that opens a real path for the trapped air to get back toward the central return. It needs no ductwork and runs modest money in parts and a couple hours of labor.

The most discreet option is a jumper duct, a short insulated duct running up through the ceiling of the closed room and back down in the hallway, so the air crosses over without a hole in the wall. All of these do the same job: let the conditioned air keep flowing into the room instead of backing up. Why does a room far from the air handler get less airflow?

Distance and bends cost airflow. The air leaving the blower has to travel the length of the duct to reach each room, and a room at the far end of a long, twisty run gets there last and weakest. Every sharp bend adds resistance, and a duct that is kinked, crushed, or undersized chokes the flow even more. Flexible ducting that has been compressed or left sagging in the attic can lose a large share of its airflow at the crushed spot alone. So the bedroom over the garage at the end of the hall is often hot simply because it is last in line.

Duct leaks make it worse. If the supply ducts running through an attic or crawlspace have gaps at the joints, they dump conditioned air into that unconditioned space before it ever reaches the far room. Sealing those leaks and, where needed, adding or resizing the register for the starved room are the paid fixes here. Why does one room get so much hotter in the afternoon?

When a room runs hot no matter what you do with the vents, the cause is usually heat load, not airflow, and the most common source is the sun. A west- or south-facing window pours heat in, and the numbers are real: a sunny window can admit the equivalent of a small space heater, and west rooms peak in the late afternoon right when it is already hottest outside. Plain glass passes most of that solar energy straight through. The most effective answer is to block the sun before it hits the glass, with exterior shades or awnings, since outside shading stops far more heat than anything you hang on the inside, though cellular shades and light-blocking drapes inside still help.

A few other room features drive heat load. A room over an unconditioned garage or a bonus room tucked under the roof picks up heat from the space next to it, an exterior corner room has more wall exposed to the weather, and a room with weak insulation or air leaks loses the battle faster than its neighbors. For rooms like these, fixing the source, shading the windows, sealing leaks, adding insulation, often does more and lasts longer than trying to force more cold air into a room that keeps shedding it.

Can the thermostat location cause uneven room temperatures?

Yes, and it is an easy one to overlook. A central system reads the temperature at one spot, wherever the thermostat happens to be mounted. It runs until that one room is satisfied, then shuts off. If the thermostat is in a comfortable hallway or living room while the problem room is down the hall, the system will keep declaring victory before the problem room ever catches up, so that room stays off no matter how the rest of the house feels.

There is no free fix for the physics of one thermostat reading one room, but there are real ones. A smart thermostat with remote room sensors can read the problem room and run the system until that room, not just the hallway, is comfortable. Running the system fan continuously, set to ON instead of AUTO, also helps by mixing the air between rooms so hot and cold pockets do not form, though it adds a little to the bill. What does it cost to fix rooms that are different temperatures?

Work from cheapest to most expensive, because the free fixes solve most cases. Clearing vents, opening doors, adjusting the balancing dampers, running the fan continuously, and undercutting a door are all free or nearly so. The big-ticket fixes are for rooms that the cheaper steps cannot rescue. A zoning system splits your existing ducts into independently controlled areas with motorized dampers and a thermostat per zone, and runs roughly $1,500 to $8,500 installed depending on how many zones. A ductless mini-split adds independent heating and cooling to the one problem room with no ductwork at all, around $3,500 to $5,500 installed for a single zone, which is often the right answer for a converted attic, a sunroom, or an addition the main system was never sized to reach.
